IT must be extend your captain’s contract day in the AFL with Richmond captain Trent Cotchin signing a contract extension on the same day as Essendon captain Jobe Watson.

Unlike Watson who signed a four year contract, Cotchin’s new deal is for two more years that will see him remain with the Tigers until at least the end of the 2015 season.

“I’m very excited,” said Cotchin in comments released by the club.

“The Club’s going somewhere, and I want to be a part of the success that all involved with the Tigers crave.

“We want to keep this young group together over the next period of our careers.”

Cotchin, 23, was the second overall pick of the 2007 National Draft and has now played in 94 games for Richmond since his debut in against Geelong in Round 8 of the 2008 season. He has  won the Jack Dyer Medal as the club’c best and fairest player in both 2011 and 2012 and was a runner up in last year’s Brownlow Medal count.

“It’s a fantastic result to have our captain extend his contract until the end of 2015. This underlines his commitment to helping the team achieve success. We hope that this leads to a number of our other key players extending their contracts in the coming months,” said Richmond General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson.

“Trent has slotted into the captaincy role really well, and we look forward to him building on his football and leadership from here.”

Richmond will play the West Coast Eagles at Patersons Stadium this Sunday afternoon.
